New York is one of the most recognizable cities in America, as well as one of the leading attractions that draw visitors from all over.
New York City is arguably home to many of America’s most famous landmarks, including Ellis Island and Times Square. New York features a litany of museums, theaters, restaurants and hotels that has made it a magnet for tourists for over two centuries. The outdoor attractions include Central Park, which offers abundant green spaces and several recreational facilities like baseball diamonds or tennis courts. With so much to see in New York City whether on foot or by car or bus there are always new places to explore with just about every visit you make possible.
New York is the birthplace of a great many things, from famous people to unique events. The city is the home of several United States Presidents, including Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. The Statue of Liberty is one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks and has become a symbol for freedom.
The Statue of Liberty was situated on an island in New York Bay from 1884 until 1910 at which point it was moved to its current location on Bedloe’s Island. The statue was designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and the torch was designed by Gustave Eiffel. The height of the statue is 93 meters (305 feet) including its pedestal and foundations.
It was constructed in France and then shipped over to be erected in New York. The total cost of the construction of the statue reached approximately $250,000, with much of that sum donated by American citizens. A huge celebration marked the unveiling of the Statue on October 28, 1886 where over 25,000 people were in attendance! Today, nearly four million people visit this national landmark every year.
The Statue of Liberty has been a national icon in America ever since it was shipped to New York, and it will continue to be so for many decades to come. In celebration of the Diamond Jubilee of the statue, events are being held throughout New York City including concerts, parades and fireworks displays.
There are several historical attractions that visitors can take in when in New York City such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, American Museum of Natural History, National September 11 Memorial and Museum or Top Of The Rock Observatory. There are also great places to eat while touring the city including Rockefeller Center Ice Rink, Cafe Edison or Chelsea Market.
