The statue was designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and the torch was designed by Gustave Eiffel. The height of the statue is 93 meters (305 feet) including its pedestal and foundations.

It was constructed in France and then shipped over to be erected in New York. The total cost of the construction of the statue reached approximately $250,000, with much of that sum donated by American citizens. A huge celebration marked the unveiling of the Statue on October 28, 1886 where over 25,000 people were in attendance! Today, nearly four million people visit this national landmark every year.

The Statue of Liberty has been a national icon in America ever since it was shipped to New York, and it will continue to be so for many decades to come. In celebration of the Diamond Jubilee of the statue, events are being held throughout New York City including concerts, parades and fireworks displays.
